What’s happening in Walthamstow this week…

  • There’s a Highland Evening at the Waltham Forest Town Hall Social Club on Saturday 1stDecember from 7.30pm. For more information call Tommy Anderson on 07506733382.
  • The final McGuffin event of 2012 will be onSaturday 1st December. Christmas Film and TV Quiz Night in 6 rounds of questions along with the annual bumper Christmas raffle.   • Peterhouse Community Centre are holding a ‘Christmas Bazaar’ on Saturday 1st Decemberfrom 1pm to 5pm. Light lunch and refreshments available to buy along with cakes, biscuits, jams, jewellery, pictures, calendars, cards and books.
  • The Movement for Change are also holding a ‘Community Organising’ taster session on Saturday 1st December from 10am to 1pm at 23 Orford Road. Half day training with tea and coffee provided as well as an overview of local campaigns to get involved with. For more information contact Mike or register here.
  • Play expert Tim Gill will be giving a presentation on Sunday 2nd December at 2pm in Lloyd Park’s new bowls pavilion. Tim is a respected writer, researcher and consultant on children’s play. The event, which is organised by the Friends of Lloyd Park, will be followed by a Q&A session with Tim.
  • The next William Morris Big Local meeting will take place on Tuesday 4th December at the William Morris Community Centre, 8 Greenleaf Road, E17 6QQ. Open to all who work or live in the William Morris ward and want to get involved in the community vision for the next ten years.
  • There is a meeting of senior local councillors onTuesday 4th December to debate and decide on a proposal to support the Compulsory Purchase of the EMD Cinema so it can be revived as a place of entertainment, depending on the outcome of the public inquiry now underway. The debate is open to the public with access to Waltham Forest Town Hall from 7pm.
  • Significant Seams are opening a new inclusive community centre in East Walthamstow in the New Year. But they still need to finish fundraising for improvements to the property and get the work done. Head over to 131 Wood Street between 6-9pm on Thursday 6thDecember for an open house where they will show their plans.
  • Wood Street Indoor Market have traditional Christmas carols, mince pies and mulled wine on Thursday 6th December for their Christmas Celebrations. Santa’s grotto on 8th December too – and you can enter their ‘Elves and FairiesCompetition’ by clicking here.
  • There will be a Circle Dancing to World Music special Christmas session on Thursday 6thDecember between 2pm and 4.30pm.   • There will be a Guffaw Comedy Club Christmas Special at the Rose and Crown E17 is onThursday 6th December at 9pm. Star studded line-up with Jeremy Hardy – star of Radio 4’s News Quiz, Hattie Hayridge from Red Dwarf and Geoff Boyz. It is expected to sell-out so click here to book tickets for £14.
  • College Amateur Operatic Society (CAOS) present ‘At Her Majesty’s Pleasure’ – a revue of songs and dance celebrating the 60 year reign of Queen Elizabeth II.   • Alex and Salim Khan are holding their next Indian supper club at their home in Walthamstow on Friday 7th December at 7.30.   • News from Nowhere Club has their next event on Saturday 8th December with Ruth Levitas, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Bristol and Chair of the William Morris Society. 7.30pm for a buffet (and bring something if you can) with the talk and discussion at 8pm with free entry. Walthamstow X-factor +1 Competition 
As MP for Walthamstow, I’ve been offered tickets for the live final of the X Factor 2012 at the Manchester Evening News Arena onSaturday 8th December. This is your chance to nominate a Walthamstow resident who deserves a treat to join me as my +1 at the X Factor Final. You must make sure that your nominee is able to be in Manchester by 5pm on Saturday 8th December as well as over 18 years of age. Hotel accommodation will be provided. If you want to nominate someone for this special prize, email me by 10am on Tuesday 4th December with your nomination which to be accepted must include a short statement on why this person represents Walthamstow’s x factor, their name, address and contact details (as well as consent to be nominated!)
