Since my election In May 2010 a large number of constituents have contacted me asking for help and advice with issues relating to immigration and asylum law in the UK.

Many of these constituents have previously been given inappropriate advice from fee-charging immigration advisers, and as a result have had difficulties resolving their applications. In addition the Government has recently ended legal aid funding for general advice sessions by law centres and advisers such as the Citizens Advice Bureau. This has resulted in some of these services being cut – in Walthamstow, there are now no organisations offering free legal aid for immigration cases.

Below is a guide which has been designed to help people get proper advice on their immigration cases, to outline what can be expected of immigration advisers, and to explain how my role as an MP fits into this process.

The following downloadable PDF is a short guide for Walthamstow residents from the office of Stella Creasy MP.

The guide includes the following information:

  • Immigration advisers: what to look out for
  • Types of advisers
  • Level 1 - Basic immigration advice and services
  • Level 2 - More complex issues
  • Level 3 – Appeals
  • How Your MP Can Help You
  • Helpful hints when instructing an immigration adviser
  • Useful contacts for advice and legal information
